Transforming Art

Local Students explore the art of recycling.

This week we were given the amazing opportunity to go to the private view of Maiden Erlegh School’s art exhibition.

The GCSE Year 9 students at Maiden Erlegh School in Earley were given the exciting chance to create some pieces for their own gallery, ‘The Peacock Gallery’. They could make anything they wanted, as long as all of the materials were recycled.

The students made pieces out of books, crisp packets, clothes, toys, chicken wire, paper Mache, newspaper, magazines and cardboard.

Some pieces are 3D and some are 2D. The pieces range from birds and elephants to dresses and photo frames.

‘I think that making pieces of art is both fun and environmentally friendly,’ quoted one student, Emily Banthorpe,’ It helps us to understand that recycling can be fun and creative. It has helped us to think outside the box as we weren’t using materials that we usually use. We had to use our imagination and make things like bottle tops look like eyes, or bin bags look like fur.’

On Thursday night between 4 and 6 pm, all of the students that created these pieces of art will be bringing family and friends to the private view.

 

Many artists have inspired these students with work of their own. Artists such as Gary Harvey, Robert Bradford and many more!
